Santa Clarita Water Questions — Answered

SCV water is uniquely challenging — 17 GPG hardness, PFAS contamination, and a salt softener ban. Here are the questions we hear most from local homeowners.

No. Salt-based ion-exchange softeners are banned throughout the Santa Clarita Valley under a local ordinance designed to protect the Santa Clara River. SCWC installs only salt-free conditioning systems in SCV. Salt-based systems are available in our Los Angeles County and Ventura County service areas.

Santa Clarita water tests at approximately 17 GPG (grains per gallon), which is classified as “Very Hard.” The state average is around 10 GPG. This level of hardness causes accelerated scale buildup on fixtures, water heaters, and appliances.

SCV water has been found to contain 12+ detected contaminants, with 9 exceeding EWG health guidelines. Santa Clarita ranks in the top 10 statewide for PFAS contamination — the highest in Los Angeles County. A whole-home conditioning system combined with a reverse osmosis drinking system addresses both hardness and contaminants.

Traditional water softeners use salt to remove hard minerals via ion exchange — effective but banned in SCV. Salt-free water conditioners transform mineral crystals so they can’t stick to surfaces. You get all the scale-prevention benefits with no salt, no wastewater, and no banned discharge.

SCV homeowners lose an average of $1,970 per year to hard water — through shortened appliance lifespans, higher energy bills from scale buildup on water heaters, more soap and cleaning product use, and premature plumbing repairs.

Whole-home conditioners address hardness and scale throughout your home. RO systems provide an additional layer of filtration at your drinking water tap — removing PFAS, nitrates, chlorine byproducts, and other contaminants. Dan recommends RO for any home where drinking water quality is a concern, which in SCV is most homes.
